Frontiers 2024

Frontiers marked Mankin's 7th solo exhibition and his 5th with Cornwall Contemporary Gallery in Penzance, West Cornwall, 12 September to 12 October 2024 The word ‘frontier’ anchors the work displayed in this exhibition. It is a word that that evokes uncharted territory and boundaries to be crossed. It is Cornwall, a timeless land shaped by the elements, perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean that inspires Mankin. A frontier landscape, unpredictable, changeable, extreme in nature it propels him on his journey of discovery. In this body of work we see striking colour contrasts, inventive brushwork, more intensive mark making and a greater exploration of spatial illusion. We see more dramatic and overlapping forms and we feel the rhythms, the gestures, the impulsive decisions and passages of paint applied with expressionistic vitality. We feel the artist striving for, and pushing each canvas to its own frontier, to the edge, in an attempt to see beyond.
