‘Frontiers of the bay’, 122 x152cm, acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Inspired by Mounts Bay in Cornwall where I live and work. It’s also owned by collector who also looks out onto the bay each day.

“Frontiers represents Mounts Bay where I live. I am out at sea looking inward to the
land. I am caught up in the energy and strength of the sea as it reminds me who is in charge. The power and the glory. The salty tang, the pull of the tide, waves unfurling and descending in crashing symphonies.

A painting you love serves as a backdrop to daily life but enhances, enriches every time you
glance at it. It helps me meditate, reflect, regenerate. It inspires me.”

Bedruthan, 102 x 102cm, acrylic and mixed media on canvas. A piece inspired by Bedruthan Steps a stunning array of rock stacks on North Cornish coast. There’s a legend about a giant called Bedruthan using the beach stacks as stepping stones to cut across the bay.

“In my head I have a vision of Mankin as a storm far off at sea, where no eye sees it stirring the fathomless depths. The ground swell builds in the deep of his studio, sending its energy for hundreds of miles across the ocean until it meets the shallows, where huge mounding waves build and crest. We are the shore, the cliff, on which that breathtaking surf breaks, moved, energised and uplifted by the beauty of what we see”

A wonderful, heartfelt and insightful quote from the collector of Night woke to blush’, 36 x 28 cm, acrylic and mixed media on wood panel. A piece that came alive through constant dance of change, transition and risk. The orange sweep of cadmium orange was the final moment of this dance…pure impulse, a dramatic move which transformed the painting into one I love and one that connected and resonated deeply with the collector who acquired it. #powerofart Incredible!

A quick review of a new sourcebook I’ve just completed as part of a much larger project which has focused on three locations in Cornwall. A mixture of location sketches and works on paper which have been deconstructed and reconstructed to further abstract, plus collages, crops and photo grids. This Collage sourcebook includes 39 collages together with some of my favourite poems and passages of art writing that resonate with me. It’s always inspiring to look through, read and find new and different connections. I must make another one soon! 🎯

Here’s one of the poems I have in the sourcebook by William Wordsworth.

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours :
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This sea that bares her bosom to the moon;
The winds that will be howling at all hours, And are up-gathered now like sleeping flowers;
For this, for every thing, we are out of tune;
It moves us not. - Great God! I’d rather be A Pagan suckled in a creed outworn ;
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea, Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathed horn

But please read on…as it is exciting…I’ve been busy in the studio putting the final touches to a small collection of postcards I’m donating to the RWA’s (Royal West of England Academy) 2025 Secret Postcard Auction: 10th year celebration. I feel absolutely honoured to be part this special auction to raise much needed funds for the arts. @rwabristol

The secret auction will consist of over 350 postcards. It goes live on Friday 24 October and closes on November 6.

All the postcards will also form part of a major exhibition at RWA Bristol and this will run from Tuesday 28 October until November 6. Well worth a visit to see if you can spot the artist!
